Romanian Treachery

Months had passed with numerous Zhentaran diplomatic envoys completely ignored by the Romanians. Prospects for a peaceful resolution were looking grim.

Then, in 2405.1, the Romanians sent raiders to two different border systems. These new vessels were much larger than anything seen previously from the Romanians. They were sleek and elegant, in the shape of a three pronged claw reaching out to rake their targets. In their haught arrogance, the Romanians only sent lone vessels in their strikes.

Unfortunately for the aggressors, the Zhentaran defense forces were ready for them. Two Tanarân class destroyers lay in ambush at the Gergan warp point with orders to fire on any armed Romanian vessels that came through.

The battle opened with a strafing maneuver by the Zhentaran defenders. They flew closely past the attacking Romanian vessel, unleashing a deadly barrage of depleted uranium shells into its sides. A deluge of fuel leaked into space from the massive ruptures in the engine systems of the Romanian vessel. In return, the Romanian fired its lone depleted uranium cannon and a single missile at the Tanarân 0031, destroying two of its depleted uranium cannons and causing minor damage to its engines.

As soon as they were reloaded, the Tanarân vessels opened another broadside at the Romanian. Its remaining engine systems were destroyed.

The Tanarân destroyers continued their strafing run and flew past the Romanian, to the limit of weapons range. They executed a 180 degree turn and continued pelting the Romanian, utterly destroying it. The impressive black and red Romanian vessel was no match for the heavily armed Tanarân destroyers.

Elsewhere, in the Benezar system, the second battle went even worse for the maurading Romanian destroyer. Later reports confirmed that both vessels were of the same makeup.

Benezar was a frontier system, sandwiched between two different alien empires. It was one of the farthest arms from the Zhentaran homeworld, Zyr. As a result, it received more defensive funding than most other systems. Fortunately, the other neighboring empire, the Pentithles Union, was far more agreeable than the Romanians.

The maurading Romanian destroyer was faced with 2 frigates and 2 destroyers. The opening barrage of depleted uranium shells crippled it. All of its weapon systems and most of its engines were obliterated. The demands for surrender by the commanding zhael were ignored. The Zhentaran defenders had no choice but to destroy the crippled Romanian vessel.

"Cap'n, we've got to get out of here!" screamed Mr. Spork as he watched the Colony ship explode through the hull breach on the bridge, "the force field will collapse at any moment!"

"All hands abandon ship! All ye scuvry dogs abandon ship!" shouted Captain Jub as flames engulfed the bridge, his left arm dangling by a few tendons. "Mr. Spork, take my share of the booty and go, go now yar!"

"Aargh, I can't leave you here sir!" cried out Spork.

"Damn it Spork, do it or I'll shot you myself - I'm not going to make it now... don't be a stupid moron!" fired back Jub, as his arm fell off and he himself collapsed to the deck.

"Yes Cap'n!" replied Spork as he made his way to specially prepared escape pod. He admired Captain Jub and would die with him, if it wasn't for all the riches in the pod. If he survived he would surely spread the word about Captain Jub's remarkable holdout against 8 warships of the Metal Protectorate for more than 40 time units. It was a true act of heroism, and even moreso for a scurvy selfish pirate.

Spork watched from the escape pod as it blasted away from the hulk of the Rider into the emptiness of space. At that moment the last few missiles slammed into the pirate ship causing it to explode in a brilliant fireball. The shockwave from the blast sent Spork's pod tumbling towards the purple planet in the distance...

After much effort, crewmember Mr. Spork aboard the Minion raider Rider has been able to translate a new message recently sent by the Black Metal Protectorate.

"Captain, it appears the scurvy Metalheads are upset over the recent capture of one of their colony vessels," said Mr. Spork.

"Why do you say that Mr. Spork?" replied Captain Jub as he swirled around in his command chair.

"Well cap, It says 'Prepare to Die'," replied Spork.
Captain Jub smiled, "So they're trying to sell grave plots or maybe even a fancy casket or two are they? I surely hope they saved some for themselves."

The Black Metal Upheaval

It was over as fast as it began. A coup, initiated by top Black Metal Military commanders have carried out an assault on the Imperial Palace at Helvete Prime, and deposed the reigning Emperor Freduk. Freduk hardly expected the move, particularly since he yet another in a series of puppet figureheads. He died slowly, and was consumed.

The times have now changed.

Dredelayne Chembryl, high commander of Black Metal Military Forces has been installed as emperor. Governing bodies are now tasked with answering directly to Him. Former bureaucratic systems have been purged, and dissidents have been... consumed. The New Order of the Black Metal Protectorate has risen, and will now shape the Void.

Honor binds Dredelayne to change the title of Emperor to Freduk, and this is the first Freduk of the Order of the Black Metal Protectorate.

Dredelayne sends this blanket message to all who inhabit the Void:

(OOC: The Black Metal all speak in slow, deliberate tones, with breaths interspersed in their speak at abnormal, disconcerting times.)

"We are the.... true Children... of the Void. It called Me... forth from the Deep Dark, and I.... answered.

Allies of the.... former Freduk, to thee I.... send these tidings. Past... allies shall remain so. New allies have.... received... my overtures. For now, the... Calm of the Void.... shall remain. We will thus entertain.... this hypocrisy until.... the Time of Blades.

Our Flesh for the Void,

Romanian Treachery

The Zhentaran military defense vessel Tarik 0003 was on a routine border patrol mission in the Gergan system. All of the alien species in the region were peaceful and there were no pirate marauders to deal with. It was a day like any other.

Suddenly, four escort sized vessels constructed in the Romanian style appeared through the warp point. The Zhentara Martial Republic and the Romanian Revivalist Dominion were trade partners, so there was no reason for alarm. The commanding telkar of the vessel ordered a transmission to be made, "Greetings Romanian vessels. What are your intentions in this sector?" No responding transmission was received.

After a few moments of silence, the tactical operations ilzhar spoke in grave tones, "telkar, I am detecting weapons port activities from the Romanian vessels. 4 incoming missiles detected!"

In cool tones, the telkar gave his orders, "I want these scum off of my screens immediately. Initiate evasive actions."

Tarik 0003 maneuvers into firing range. The depleted uranium cannons were fired on the first Romanian aggressor before it had a chance to launch any missiles. The first salvo managed to destroy its weapons array, effectively crippling it.

The evasive flight pattern adopted by Tarik 0003 allowed the ship to effectively evade one of the three missiles heading towards it. The other two slammed into it's sides, causing minor structural damage.

"Damage report!" barked the telkar.

"Only minor damage, telkar. We can still give these dogs what they deserve!"

Only the previously crippled Romanian vessel was within weapons range. It exploded in a ball of fire with the next depleted uranium salvo.

"Telkar, the Romanian vessels have slowed to a crawl," reported the tactical ilzhar. "They appear to be out of fuel."

"Excellent!" remarked the telkar. "They've come to play but have forgotten their toys, eh boys?" A raucous round of laughter ensued amongst the bridge crew.

Tarik 0003 proceeded to dispatch 2 more of the invading Romanian vessels. The fourth was in pursuit.

To the communications ilzhar, the telkar of Tarik 0003 said, "Transmit a message demanding their immediate surrender, ilzhar."

"Telkar! The enemy vessel has turned around and is accelerating towards us."

"Fools," muttered the telkar. "Destroy them!"

The Tarik 0003 opened fire on the remaining Romanian vessel, ripping it apart.

Dri'Vyn Realm.

The Expansion was over. It had been 3 years and the Realm had been extended until it came across alien species. In most cases the interaction had been peaceful. Some alien vessels had been destroyed by the Realms defences, but after being informed of the alternative, peaceful treaties had been signed with the aliens agreeing not to intrude within the Realm, though it still existed as to whether they obeyed or not. One race seemed plagued with disorder, it’s ships alternatively declaring war, only to be dealt with by Dri’Vyn forces, then calling for a new treaty. Another race, the Zhentara, had been no threat, so far, easily obeying warnings. A third race was deemed peaceful, but even now after the signing of the new treaty had sent a vessel into the heart of the Realm. Hopefully the treaty would not need to be disbanded. A fourth race had been encountered but communication was non-existant, no doubt limited by their extreme physical difference from all other life, and as long as they stayed out of the Realm, the Dri’Vyn were happy to leave it at that. Then there existed the Tesco. Warned not to intrude the Tesco had none the less placed a colony within the Realm, a condition not to be accepted for longer than it took to remove them. No communication had been relayed from them and elsewhere their vessels had been destroyed by the Realms defences, hastily placed to limit further incursions from them. Initial actions had failed, but in time force would be diverted to deal with this insult to the Realms integrity.

Black Day for Black Metal.

The artificial light, made to resemble that of Homeworld, was fading as Archon Ryne Cha'vat made his way across the station's Garden Quarter. Being an Archon brought responsibility, as well as power, and today he had shown and applied a fair amount of both.

How many had died when the Tesco Amalgamation had... what? And why? They had allowed the colony ship to land at Ikrod III, allowed the crew to unload their cargo and passengers, and once work was complete on the fledgling colony, had blown it all to hell. Ryne couldn't fathom it out. He had spies everywhere throughout the Protectorate, spies he knew he could trust, and he was very thorough. But as far as he knew, there was no amount of enmity between his own Empire and that of the Amalgamation that could justify their ruthless destruction of an unarmed colony. And that meant that someone higher up, perhaps Emperor Freduk himself, had been keeping the real tensions between the Teskies and the Protectorate a public secret. Even so... his spies... best not to think about it.

Emperor Freduk himself had been indisposed, of course, and so hadn't issued a statement on the attack. Many of the Protectorate wanted blood, and rightly so, but Ryne couldn't help but feel a degree of respect for the Teskies. They had squares, that was for damn sure. Pretty damn big squares, to provoke the wrath of the Protectorate, but no decree had been issued. No declaration of war, or sanctions, or anything along those lines had been talked about at all. The Amalgamation had gotten away with the attack completely unscathed, as far as the Powers That Be were concerned. Not so with Ryne.

That was why, twelve hours ago, Emperor Freduk had been indisposed. At least, if you allowed that indisposed could actually mean "kidnapped and flown out to the rim". If you could call indisposed "ejected from an airlock and floating through space, with countless burst blood vessels and no sign of life". If you could find it in your morals to take indisposed as "caught in the blast of a missile set on remote destruct as it flew past his lifeless corpse". No, nobody would ever find anything of the late Emperor, or even question his absence.

"Emperor," Ryne chuckled, coming to a halt by the bench. The new Emperor looked just like Freduk. It really was amazing what a little facial remodelling could do, these days. "You're looking very well."

"Thank you, Archon. I trust I am living up to your expectations?" He even sounded like Freduk - which, of course, was essential.

"We wouldn't be speaking to each other if that wasn't the case. Emperor." The Archon smiled then, before continuing on his way across the garden. Yes, being an Archon for the Black Metal Protectorate brought great responsibility. And great power.
