FrEee is first and foremost a clone of the venerable Space Empires IV Gold. This will extend so far that we plan on most if not all SE4 mods being totally compatible with FrEee.

As a secondary objective we will be bringing in useful features from SE3, and SE5 that enhance the SE4 expereince.

And as a final objective we plan on expanding on SE4s mod-ability by introducing new features and abilities that were not available in the original game.

sounds like a great project!

i think you should drop the SEIV mod compatibility though. it causes too much troubles and you lose flexibility. for example, you'll have to stick to the same ship design rules. i would prefer if you aim to make modding easier, for example instead of long lists with ability01=, ability02=, etc just a list with start and end tags. that makes adding a new element inbetween alot easier, but it's not compatible with SEIV - unless the engine understands both formats.

if the clone is good, people will make mods anyways. and some mods shouldn't be needed at all (for example if the balancing is good, i wouldn't make a rebalancing mod).

dance!

If we drop too much compatibility with SE4, that will require us to spend more time deciding what we actually want to implement instead instead of getting stuff done. That's why we're starting with making an SE4 clone first.

That said, we are doing a few things to make modding easier. As you sort of alluded to, we're no longer requiring the Number of Abilities field, and you can leave out the numbers in the ability fields (e.g. Ability Name instead of Ability 1 Name).

If it's posible to keep compatibility with SEIV while unlocking and correcting some of the issues related to it, I'd say go for it!

SEIV is popular for a reason, and bringing that appeal into FrEee could draw diehard SEIV fans to it.

Wow! I never noticed this section of the forum until now. The FrEee project sounds fascinating!

What can those of us who aren't programmers or artists do to help?
