Posted: Thu Feb 03, 2011 5:44 am Post subject: Colder, more Hi-tech UI...
I have never really liked the stock color scheme in SEV. It just doesn't seem to fit the icy darkness that I imagine for space. SEIV I thought captured that feeling much better.
The Dark UI mod is much better I think, but it still features those golden info and menu screens that just don't do it for me.
So I have been playing around a bit with replacing these with ones a bit colder, more hi-tech, and less intrusive.
I thought I would post some early screens here, and see if anyone had any comments or suggestions on the issue.
This shot also features a slightly darker skybox background, and planets roughly half the size of stock, to attempt to capture some of the icy vastness of space.
Here is a closer shot of the menu elements and less bulky borders.
creative!
But the first thing that comes to mind is...
AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaa HELP I'm falling!
With out the falmilure green table to lean on, there is nothing there...
But, that would be true for space.
Otherwise, like I said, creative, Thats looks good for StarFurry, but I think when we truely get into space, we will still refferance the system view to the 2D paper we curently use...
It's less scary that way... Back to top
I like that, for what it's worth! It does seem nice. I would like to see / test the smaller size of the planets on my screen to make sure, but the UI itself seems much less obtrusive.
Since I am technically inept, may I ask if this is a "mod"? If so, would it be compatible with the KK BM? Would you upload it with exact instructions on how to install it? (Me not good at these things.)
Thank you and OSU Back to top

Well, at the moment its just an idea, as it's looking to be a pretty big job to change all the various interface screens.
I will likely end up doing all report screens (ships planets, units, etc.), but I may not get to all various menus 'cos there are hordes of the things, and actually they don't bug me that much.
If you would like a copy of just that though, I would be glad to stick it up.
The install would be dead easy, just drag and drop a folder into your Pictures directory.
Might take me a little while to get it together though, and if I get some good suggestions the final look may change.
In the meantime, here is a shot of how the combat might look.
I have made the lettering a bit bluer than in the screens above and made the text boxes a slightly lighter gray.
Thank you. That looks promising and yes, I would be interested in what you have, even if it be only the main screen. I am not expecting it immediately, at your convenience would be excellent!
If possible however I would require a slightly more detailed "install" instruction, since I am computer illiterate and "just drag and drop into Pictures" is too vague for me. Sorry and thanks in advance.
This would not conflict with BM, correct?
This would not conflict with previous save-games, correct?
Thanks much ... and OSU
(not so much karate - just an afterthought and sign of respect as I saw you are located in Osaka - I do what is now called "mixed martial arts" mostly leaning towards jiu jitsu, some classic judo, but only a small bit of koye-koshinkai-karate) Back to top

NP.
Actually it looks like I may end up doing more than just the report screens. After playing a few turns, I am finding the mix of styles a bit offputting.
These UI changes are compatible with save games, BM and any other mods. The small planets shouldn't be a problem either, though the change to the grid colors may be an issue, as that is done by altering data files.
The setup process for just the Black UI would be really easy, and should be no trouble to give you very clear setup instructions.
Cool.
Love MMA. Looking forward to the Silva-Belfour fight this weekend.
Do you mean 'Kyokushinkai' karate? I did that style full contact for about the first 6 or 7 years I was here. Now I do a similar, but slightly more obscure style.

Smaller planet objects require editing XFileClasses_Stellar.txt, which is read at game load. That might pose a problem for multiplayer savegame compatibility, but it wouldn't be an issue for single player savegames. Smarter than your average Texrak. Back to top

Actually, I am using the smaller planets with a number of multiplayer games at the moment, with no problem.
Changing the color of the grid (Settings.txt) is a problem, unfortunately.
Good thing you posted shots. From the sound of things, I wasn't very interested. I like the standard interface just fine. But that does look even better, no two ways about it. Back to top

Thanks
Still mucking about with it but starting to like the results.
I had originally planned on only doing the bits that showed on the main combat and system screens, as there are almost 200 separate images that make up the UI and each one takes a fair bit of work to adapt.
I have done all the ship/unit/stellar objects, but I think I may leave the all the build, design and other admin screens gold.
I am trying to justify it by thinking that they are all concerned with commerce and spending and such, but really I am just lazy.
Here is a look.
Combat, and space related screens use the Black theme.
Build, design and other non-combat/space screens use the gold theme though, with a slightly darkened version of Raapys' Dark UI frames (much credit to him for giving me the idea and for a lot of the buttons and such).
I am actually finding that I like the mix of black combat/space elements, and warmer looking gold, commercial/admin ones. I have a feeling that playing only with 100% Black theme format might get a bit grim after a while.
I'm getting pretty close to being ready to upload a beta version of this, and will post a link here if anyone is interested in giving a try. SEV Visual Mods:

looks great! I'd be interested. "Beta" scares me a bit, since I cannot even install a mod without help, but if it's not dangerous, I'm game. Thanks much Back to top

He he, no need to panic.
In this case I called it a Beta version because I may decide to change bits of it later.
I want to play around with it a bit, perhaps change some of the colors, perhaps make it a bit lighter or darker, and maybe get some suggestions from other people, before I put it up as a final version.
It's not like a piece of software that might do something terrible to your computer. Its just a folder full of pictures.
To install, all you need to do is rename the stock folder you have now. Then copy this one into the same directory.
If you decide you dont like it, just delete the folder, and rename your original and you are good as new! SEV Visual Mods:

I like what you did with the colors on the menus, way better than the gold, but I prefer to have a grid on the map, it makes planning ship movement a lot easier when you can see how many sectors away and object is. Back to top

Yeah, I play with the grid on, though if I'm just going against the ai, I use the darker and more subtle version shown above. Have to use the more glaring stock version in Multi though as changing the grid color requires one of the main data files.
I dont use a grid in Tac combat though. That is both unsightly and not very helpful.
Speaking of which, I have reduced the extraneous borders and unused boxes on the Tac interface even further.
Dont think its going to be possible to reclaim any further real estate here, but when using decently detailed shipsets, the battles can become almost cinematic.
Looking good.
What shipset is that you have in the last screen shot (or maybe all)? I mean there's those things that look like starbases, just a lot bigger - like them. Did you resisze them? Back to top
WOW - Amazing work
Have found only a couple of errors :
Little pink pixels on the edge of elements ...
If you need i can make screenshots ...
If i remember correct 3 or 4 pixel ...

Nice spot R-team!
I think you were referring to a couple of pixels on the edge of the Tac-Combat radar screen yes?
I have been playing on my laptop and I couldnt notice them until I checked on higher res desktop monitor.
I fixed that up and updated the file.
Let me know if you spot anything else. SEV Visual Mods:

will test this
And -> have make an screenshot from the other pink pixels
Sitting in the quadrant view - have one marked with an yellow circle - the other with an yellow arrow .. it looks an error from the red "X" point ..

The red roundels and "X"s on the quadrant map are part of the shipset, not the UI.
What shipset is the red player using in this shot?
And wow, I had forgotten how starry the stock skybox was.
A bit too busy and distracting for my tastes.
If anyone would like, I could upload the darker and more subtle one (seen screens above). SEV Visual Mods:
