While working on the new maintenance system in the VehicleSize.txt, I was thinking of ways to make carriers more likely to be used as, well, carriers.

An easy way would be to make special mounts for fighter hangers that would reduce their size when used on carrier hulls. However, since hull sizes are customized by race, this wouldn't work out so well.

So, I have made carrier hulls cheaper with a lower base maintenance cost (20% vs 25%) while being able to launch/recover fighters at a reduced rate even if all hanger bays were destroyed. They also have a slightly lower maximum speed, increased defense penalty and require 50% fighter bays.

Are the benefits enough to balance the penalties, plus encourage their regular use in the game, particularly for fighter-focused races?

In think the penalties are good for carriers, and the maintainence bonuses alone make them better launch platforms than transports.

Carriers have always been a tough nut to crack. I think that your approach is a great start.

The limit of 255 mounts in CompEnhancment.txt really sucks... How many other mounts are you using? If you have 60 or so mount slots available, the fighter bay mount system will work nicely.

Keep in mind the cheesy tactic of using Light Carriers as early game warships in stock SEIV. You definitely need to make this a bad choice if you are reducing the base cost and maintenance of carrier hulls.

The defense penalty should do that already.

A cool idea would be to make some carrieres that have a reduced penalty and fighter bay requirnmnet so that they can be hybrid carrier / warships.

Keep in mind there are no stock set of carriers in the mod. Some races have 3 or 4, while others have just 1 designated carrier hull - and they all differ in size so it makes it difficult to make specific mounts for each ship since some of them occupy the same tonnage as other non-carrier ships. Yes, I could probably work it so that there is no 'overlap' but I prefer to set up something without mounts that is good.
