With the stormbringer patch (see download thread), all the storms will have lightning arc through them.

The one minor point of weakness is that all the storms are identical, so a system-wide nebula has all of its component storms flashing in synch.

What do you think?

In terms of numbers, I wouldn't make every single stand-alone storm have the lightning effect and perhaps restricted nebulae storms to have only a few of the electro-storms.

You could also use photoshop to highlight darken areas of the storm bitmaps to create animations to simulate internal lightning/explosions etc.

Almost forgot, the lightning effect itself needs to appear less solid - perhaps a tad denser then the storm itself.

That first part will mostly have to wait until Aaron enables the random functions on the relevant fields of the xfiles file.

Making the lightning thinner would also mean less bright.
Have you seen the storms "in action"? I think the constant motion helps to make the lightning seem less solid than it appears in the screenshot.

Yes I've seen them in game. It's actually where I first suggested that comment which was directed to Fyron on IRC.

A more varied opacity (need a greater range of colour within the lightning itself) will help make the lightning look more realistic or at least on par with the storm clouds. It's a little too cartoony.

As a side note, couldn't that be the start of an energy / gas race?

Maybe lightning "caging" the gas, if you want something looking different...

There is a fine line between Genius and Insanity. I am firmly on one side of that line!

You could certainly make this into a new planet type.

Really cool would be if colonized planets could have extra effects over the bare model...
Clouds of smog, or twinkling city lights or any number of cool things.
