In updating the mod data files for v1.20, I was considering changing the design type naming convention from the current Balance Mod scheme:

Attack Drone
Attack Ship (S)
Defense Base (S)
Heavy Troop
Kamikaze Fighter
Missile Ship (L)
Satellite (S)
etc.

to

Base (Defense S)
Drone (Attack)
Fighter (Kamikaze)
Satellite (S)
Ship (Attack S)
Ship (Seeker L)
Troop (Heavy)
etc.

Since SE5 displays the list of all design types alphabetically, the second scheme would group all vehicle type names together, whereas the current scheme does not group by vehicle type.

This is a bit of work to do as it involves also updating the AI scripts to match so I wanted to make sure before making the change that most players would prefer the new scheme. Vote for your preference!

That current list looks effectively random to me.

Sorting by vehicle type is a quite handy way to go.

Another possibility is to sort by use, which the current scheme is not quite accomplishing.

eg:
DirectFire Base
DirectFire Drone
DirectFire Fighter
DirectFire Ship
Kamikazi Base
Kamikazi Drone
Kamikazi Fighter
Kamikazi Ship
Missile Base
Missile Drone
Missile Fighter
Missile Ship
PointDefense Base
PointDefense Drone
PointDefense Fighter
PointDefense Ship

Either way, the goal should be a two step search; scroll to the vehicle type and then choose from the nearby usages. Or, scroll to the usage, and then choose from the nearby vehicle types.

Personally I would lean to having the vehicle types be the primary sort key, since when making a design, you have to choose a hull first. You might change your mind on the role of the design as you work (in which case the new design type is right next to the one you already selected), but you can't change the hull without starting over.

I would agree with SJ that they need to be standardized somehow, whether by function or by hull. I'm not entirely sure which is better; each has its advantages.

That's no space station - it's a spreadsheet!

I don't generally use most of the design types in PvP games because enemies can see your design type. The addition of more generic types in addition to special ones would be nice. Hull (Type1) etc.

It doesn't affect the AI if you manually add your own types to the file, does it?

It won't affect the AI as their design types are set in the script files, but custom types won't be understood if you're using ministers.
