1.18 - purple/white...does this mean throw it out? keep it? put it elsewhere?
2.12 - terrain? really?
2.13 - weird red color...this was described as a red fungus jungle world, so it was one of the jungle textures that wound up in "Oxygen."
4.19 - jungle/swamp? ...jungle. "Jungle" & Terran" have both been condensed into "Oxygen."
And now, the remainder of the "Oxygen" textures...

1.18 wasn't sure if you wanted to use it as oxygen or not, it looks ok... but it's not what I think of when I think oxygen

Okay, first a few loose ends to tie up...
The first one is labeled 'corellia work'...you said it's an odd color, and I believe you. But, I can't see it, so it's up to you to tell me where you think it goes.
Second, I think you asked for a stretched version of this one...so, what do you think?
Third, I told you how this red one wound up in "oxygen," but that doesn't mean it necessarily belongs there...suggestions?
Finally, this is labeled 'grassy planet' and I believe is a slight re-color of a texture also used as a desert planet...to me, it does look kinda green & tan or whatever...what color(s) do you see?
And now for something slightly different...
Below are the Gas skins, with the ones with obvious seams filtered out... They need to be sorted by atmosphere type...
Our current list of Gas Giant atmospheres are:
Carbon Dioxide, Helium, Hydrogen, Methane, Oxygen, Quantum Crystal & Sulfur Dioxide.

Also, please point out any you think would do well as Brown Dwarf skins.
(Although I would hesitate to use very many exclusively for this purpose.) Back to top
so what colors did you envision for: Carbon Dioxide, Helium, Hydrogen, Methane, Oxygen, Quantum Crystal & Sulfur Dioxide?
SE5 does it like:
Carbon Dioxide, green
Helium, (not in Se5 but one of the older games had hydrogen/Helium, which looks like hydrogen)
Hydrogen, redish
Methane, purple
Oxygen, blue
Quantum Crystal, (not in SE5)
Sulfur Dioxide, (also not there, but yellowish sounds good)
Maybe just use whatever doesn't fit in one of those categories as a brown dwarf? Back to top
Green works for CO2... I think the game also uses yellow, but we'll need that for SO2...
I don't know what 'color' Helium is, but for some reason I always think of blue when I think of helium... Hmm. *searches Internet*
Quote:
Helium is a colorless and odorless gas in its natural state. It gives off a blue neon color when burned. When an electric current runs through it, helium is a pale peach to orange color.
...there's lightning in them there gas giants...peach/orange for Helium?
Red works for Hydrogen...
Purple works for Methane...(though be advised; I can't always tell the difference between blue & purple)
Oxygen...Blue could work, though I tend to think light blue and/or white when I think of oxygen planets...
Quantum Crystal... 1.28, 1.29 & 1.30 were actually labeled as 'crystal' planets by the source I got them from... Of course, I could always merge the planet model with a crystal model and then there'd be no doubt what it was!
Yellow is certainly what I'd go for with SO2... Although, Saturn kinda looks yellow, and it isn't sulfurous as far as I know...
Depending on type, artists' impressions of Brown Dwarfs range from brownish to reddish to blueish... Back to top

Good heavens... I feel like I've been trying to program an Iconian console...
"Blue. Blue. Blue."
"I hope that wasn't a stutter."
I've sorted them by the colors you indicated, but given how many different categories resulted, I'm not sure I'm any closer to knowing for which atmospheres they should be used... Back to top
Well, you have 7 atmospheres, each with it's own color range you wanted to use. I described them by color since I wasn't sure how many of each color there was.
Well, with the ones you just sorted, plus a few you previously said looked like gas, our counts stand thus:
CO2 - 24
Helium - 11
Hydrogen - 13
Methane - 24
Oxygen - 30
Quantum Crystal - 15
SO2 - 12
Plus, these that haven't been sorted yet:
I assume that even representation would be good...any idea how to achieve that? Or, should we just leave it as is? Back to top
I'd toss a few of the oxygen gas just for being redundant.
methane helium(a bit of a stretch but enh) hydrogen QC
... and these four don't fit anywhere but oxygen. I'd keep the second one because it looks cool Back to top
Making solar systems that have differing assortments of planets is fun.
I actually did that with Warp 10 in a limited way. One bonus aspect is that you can spawn special planet abilities this way. That's actually EASY, just add the name of a Stellar ability type in the data field "Stellar Abil Type" in SystemTypes.txt.
But you have to define those first in StellarAbilityTypes.txt. When doing so you need to remember that the Chance field is actually in tenths of a percent and that each chance is evaluated separately. So if you have 10 possible abilities with a chance of 100 each... each ability will have a 10% chance to spawn, and a planet could have all 10... it's unlikely, but... it can happen. like this
NOTE: you don't actually get multiple unique techs this way. The game seems to only give one of them at random, and if there's a random tech you might get that instead. Back to top
So, tell me what you think is the most important changes to try to make?
Or, should we just give up on evenness and let things fall as they will...? Back to top
Okay, I've cut it down to 115 Oxygen Terrestrials, but that's still quite a few... Here they are, please note any that you think should perhaps be in another category or left out completely...

I'm just going to note things that I think might be good to change.
p01.2,3,32 these look kinda... deserty
p01.7,19 look very similar and snowy.
p01.8 very... brown, maybe swamp?
p01.10, 02.16 very large ice caps.. arctic?
p01.14, 03.19,25 very green... no real landmasses. swamp?
p01.16, p02.8, 04.19 wasteland? the land looks very dark almost like it's charred.
p01.20 kinda... pink. maybe methane?
p01.32 maybe desert
p02.7 bright neon green... CD?
p02.30 Earth, 04.2,3 are redundant.
p02.26, 03.08,09, 04.17 very small land masses, ocean?
p03.16 very... tan. desert?
p03.32 oddly colored, the water looks light blue-green.. CD?
p04.9 black oceans? hmmmmm wasteland!
that's only 26 changes though. so you'd still have 89 That's not too bad though. Back to top
Okay... Re-organized most like you said...
2.30 is the Earth I felt looked best...
4.02 & 4.03 are both a 'future,' 'flooded' Earth...just with different clouds... I figured one of these could be included if anyone wants a climate change effected Earth...
3.08, 3.09 & 4.17 didn't look especially oceanic to me when applied to the model...
You mentioned 1.32 twice...there are a couple of others that look desert-like to me, but I hesitate to move them, because we are already heavy on Barren worlds... Currently, we have 89 Barren & 95 Oxygen... What would you think about moving 1.26, 2.04 & 2.05 to Barren? Back to top
Okay... Two things I'd like to touch on before moving on to the data files...
First, I forgot about rings... Making some of the planets into ring planets is no real problem... But, aren't rings partly transparent in the game? Having the black part of the texture be transparent would fit with having an opacity texture, but the .X format doesn't support that... So, does anybody know how that works in the game?
Second, though we covered Brown Dwarfs, we didn't cover other stars... So, could I get both thumbs up/thumbs down opinions on the following textures & color identification for same? Thanks!
Name := Planet Ringed 0001 Large
XFile := RP_01.x
Override Texture Filename :=
Base Model Radius := 8.004
Transparent Texture Filename := ring_01.bmp
It looks like the transparency is handled separately from the .x file.
I think.. never really tinkered with it. The .x file mentions both textures though.
dim red, pink blue red
red-orange (this looks like a dead star) lightblue-green white
white yellow white yellow
yellow-orange red lightblue-green white
orange orange white orange
orange red-pink blue yellow-orange
blue/purple orange orange orange
lightorange white Back to top
Well, well... Obviously, the game's engine can do at least some level of transparency that isn't supported by the .X format itself... We should test that at some later date to see how much can be done with it...
In the meantime, have any preference on which planets get rings?
Apart from the stock rings (which I always thought looked weird), I've got these...

Also, what do you think of these?

Okay, we've got 32 rings...and 20 atmosphere types. If we discount Artificial, Assimilated, Dimensional Gate & Vongformed - that leaves us with 16. So, 2 rings per atmosphere type...?
Any thoughts on which textures should be used for the different planet sizes? Back to top
