What in particular are you getting stuck with?

What's left to do for the next release:

* Allow planets (and other stellar objects?) to take part in combat
* Implement seeker weapons
* Hide the orders of enemy ships that are encountered in combat
* Fix broken bullet and explosion effects in combat
* Implement beam weapon effects (they should fire, but they are invisible)
* Add Cioden's and Combat Wombat's new planet art

Cool new stuff you'll get to see once we're done:

* Formulas in mod files, like SE5 has! You can even create multidimensional tech grids!
* Real time combat simulations, also like SE5! But this time it's newtonian! Strategic speed translates into acceleration in combat. Evasion additionally gives increased turn rate. Beam weapons can fire at any target in a circle, but projectiles will have an oblong target area if you are moving, due to the newtonian physics.
* Another SE5 feature: warnings at the end of your turn if you have idle ships or construction queues. Also if you have unresolved diplomatic proposals (not just any old unreplied message as in SE5).
* A system report, which you can bring up by clicking on an empty sector. Tells you stats about the system such as the number of ally and enemy ships, and any system-wide abilities.
* You can now save your PLR file mid-turn, either quitting to resume later, or just as a precautionary measure. Useful for those marathon turns!
* In AbilityRules.txt, you can now specify which objects are allowed to have which kinds of abilities. Don't want shield regeneration to work on bases for some reason? You can do that!
* Also in AbilityRules.txt, you can now specify a default description, using placeholders like [%Amount1%], for abilities. All the stock abilities have default descriptions, too. Now there's no need to give every single ability in the game a custom description! [%Amount1%] and such also work in actual ability descriptions, too, of course.
* You can even alias abilities, so if you don't like the name of an ability, you can refer to it by another name.
* Construction items are shown with one decimal place in their ETA, so you can tell if that's 0.1 turns per item or 0.9 turns per item.

It is Alpha 6! Download away. Sorry for the longest wait ever between releases but this one is a doozy. Mucho hard work done by se5a and ekolis.

Me? Better you not ask Razz But CW has been nagging me to work on this thing, so I don't think I'll ever be able to give up on it...

I was jonesing to play some SEIV (after several years) and looked at this site to see what new mods were available and I found this! This is one of the coolest things I have seen gamewise in a long time. I think I will drop SEIV and play this instead to help developer motivation knowing there are people that appreciate hard work without reward. Too bad you dont have a dev fund setup I would throw some money your way Very Happy

The game is totally playable yet. You could rock a multiplayer game but there iss no AI for singleplayer at all.

Yeah, definitely playable, though it might crash on turn processing after a while. Also a bunch of abilities and such aren't implemented yet... But we had a test game get up to turn 26, with combat occurring between ships! (No ground combat yet, though...)

It's kind of comlicated because the error message I get is in hungarian and I don't have the programming experience to faithfully translate or point out the problem accurately.

We don't have graphics for most of the planets yet; you'll have to copy over your planet images from SE4, if you have a copy of the game.

As for your crash issue, I'm not sure... are you getting any particular error message?

Not lately, sorry. We ran into some issues with our last test game, and I don't know if they're due to corrupted data from repeated patches, or if the game is just plain broken... never got around to starting a new game Sad

That's a pity, it looked like going to be quite a nice game.

Sorry to hear that, never good to see someones hard work and passion possibly go up in flames.

I checked back here once in a while to see how things were going with the project. I was keen on the idea of a modern SE IV with some really cool ideas that you were hoping to add to the game. Also looking back at some of the forums it would have been cool to capture some of the community that existed around SE IV years ago but sadly seems to have dwindled as no new "Official" product has come out.

I thought it would have been nice if a couple of guys in their spare time and passion could have pulled it off and reignited the flame. Maybe it may still happen but I for one appreciate the effort it has taken you to get this far.

Well, honestly, part of the reason I gave up was that no one really seemed to care anymore... what's the point of working on a game if no one's going to play it? So, not to get your hopes up too high, but if I can get Combat Wombat and some of the other folks to start up another test game, maybe we can get the ball rolling again...

I have time to play a test game, if that will help.

I might be able to clear time for a marathon turn session one of these weekends, too. That should be enough to get past the initial stuff to get into combat and mid-game stuff.

Would you be able to pull and build code, so I can fix stuff?

I understand completely, it is a big project and I know from my life free time is in short supply. Would be cool if it could be pulled off but it is pretty cool what you have got going so far.

Sure, that's no problem. I did that with the last couple of Freee test games I played.
