...it seems to me that the modified intelligence calculations are somewhat off. The greater my int point advantage over my opponents becomes, the more successfull their sabotage against me becomes.
Back when I had one quarter the points used against me allocated to self defence, I would lose one or two ships to sabotage each turn.
Now that I have twice the amount of points on self defence than my opponents use against me, that number is 5-6 ships.
Seems wrong to me...

the difference is actually in the actual NUMBER of intel points. If they have 30K intel you aren't blocking that doesn't do much. but if they have 150K you aren't blocking that does a lot more. Each intel project costs a flat number of points to execute. a difference of 120k means several more intel projects.

What are the exact numbers, races and % ?
5-6 ships sabotaged per turn sounds like a massive inbalance (200k+ points ?), try for parity.
Be thankful the opponent is using sab S&F and you are losing ships, you could be getting riots, L5 plagues & rebellions.
Don't forget the defensive bonuses around in Civics. If your race is intrinsically weak vs intel trait wise & your opponent has bonuses these can correct.
Focus your remaining offensive points vs the most likely source of the intel attack (Xiati?), once it starts taking hits, an AI will pull back onto the defensive.
If multiple sources, 5 turn bursts of offensive intel vs each target may keep them off balance.
Opponent determined human variety?
If he is wildly out-Intel ing you, you'll be out teching/building him, search & destroy his Intel worlds.

I think you're missing the point:
The greater my intelligence superiority over my opponents get, the more success they have in their covert operations against me.
One would think it would be the other way around...

What are the actual intel totals?
What % are you reserving for defense?

not sure if that is for me or marhawkman (or both) ...
I did understand your point, that was why I asked for the % etc details.
This behaviour is contrary to my experience, if you have found a set of conditions doing it, it may be a catastrophic bug.
I have been known to attack far flung enemy empires by switching my entire research base over to Intel & dumping it on them whilst I build a war fleet to deal with a more local threat.
A 2M+ inbalance really spoils their day (not mine).
As well as asking how much you are using for % defence, what are you spending that Intel surplus on?
Co-op Attack?

I've got twice the amount of intelligence points than my opponents, and 100% of it is set to self defence.
Their success rate startet increasing just as my total became greater than my theirs

Is that greater than each enemy individually, or greater than the sum total of all enemies? If they have a treaty, they might be ganging up on you.

Are you playing with an AI bonus? That often does it. Also the Intel screen itself is a poor indicator of enemy intel. Look at the diplomacy screen/comparisons to see what values are. Even then I still think that the bonus is hidden.
