When you expand the map you can click on a button that shows you the distance in light years between systems.

What use is this?

Might it be used in some way to estimate the travel time between two distant points on the map?

It is used for warp point creation. Warp openers have a rating in ly which specifies how far away they can create warp points to.

The move cost of traveling through a warp point is always just 1 point. The distance between the systems on the galaxy map is irrelevant for movement calculations.
