Troops can be destroyed via ground combat, or via orbital bombardment (but the latter may damage other things like population and facilities that you might prefer to capture). I know in SE4, you couldn't bomb a planet that you were currently invading with troops; not sure if this is still true in SE5.

It is. Once the troops land, your ships will no longer fire on that planet, although the planet can still fire on your ships and they will oblige by blissfully wandering into range.

I think I would reset the strategy for the ships at that point so they don't become "free kills"
EDIT: or manually move them out of range

He's exaggerating somewhat. If your ships have no target to attack they normally move out of engagement range... NORMALLY... Sometimes the AI does stupid crap for no obvious reason.

Right, but if there are targets to attack on the other side of the planet, they'll cross over the colony and get shredded by its defenses instead of attempting to go around.

this is why I like tactical combat where I could control such situation, or at least try Razz, and marhawkman: Yeah, they do, but I think that is because there is no case script for the AI in that certain instance and the AI doesn't know what to do so they panic or keep getting closer to be killed off Smile

When I play against the AI (which I normally do), there always seems to be that one AI that is the runt of the pack and way way far behind become a "free kill"
